Nothing really new this week. Getting a little tired of hearing about the Apple iPad but what can you do? I wouldn't mind having one but it's not a must have item. Nor does it appear to be what I've been looking for these past four months.

Speaking of which at the moment I'm leaning strongly towards just getting a netbook to serve as a take-along journal replacement. AN Asus Eee PC 1001P seems the most promising at the moment. Now that companies are starting to announce prices for the tablet devices they'll be releasing in the coming months I'm seeing a clear trend of pricing them at $500 or more and I'm not really interested in putting that kind of money down for something potentially less flexible than what I could get in a netbook for $300.

This past week I got some work done on the projects I'm supposed to be working on. Really not much to be said there.

I got that box spring out the door. Decided not to ponder what those large yellow stains were overmuch. It was picked up this morning. It's now possible to get to just about everything in the room so that's a definite improvement. Now, I have the huge chair, computer table, a hamper full of blankets(?), two chests of drawers, a hospital bed, a strange exercise contraption, a desk chair, a sewing machine table with sewing machine mounted, a wheeled cabinet, and the contents of the two closets and everything stuffed into everything else to deal with.

I finally picked up the holiday debris in the living room. Shipping boxes and wrapping paper for the most part. Calling that room the living room is questionable. I don't spend much time in there and it really only gets used during special occasions and such. I'd refer to it as a parlor but that tends to get confused looks. This house really has two rooms that could be called a living room. The one that the front door opens into and the really large room in the back. I tend to think of the latter as the living room. Those who've been in the house will know what I'm talking about. Anyrate, the front room has been picked up and swept.

No news on my search for an electronic notebook/PDA this week. Right now, I'm waiting for various products to be released and we'll see what turns up. I'd like to get something by summer since it's possible I may be doing some traveling this year.

That's pretty much it for this past week.

The mattress was picked up this morning. I didn't realize how smelly and dusty the thing was. Next week the box spring will follow and the week after that possibly the frame. Then maybe I can rearrange the remaining furniture to afford better access to the closets. There'll still be a great deal of furniture in there but without the huge bed there'll be room to move at the least. This probably should have been done about 2 years ago.

Behind this cut there's a long rambling rumination on various smallish or handheld devices I've looked at or considered as a paper notebook/journal replacement. Don't expect it to be all that organized. It could probably use a pass or two by a copy editor but if I were going to worry about that today I'd probably never bother to post any of this stuff. )

In other news I need to lose about 5 lbs which means I need to get more exercise. That should be easy enough as far as it goes.

I guess that's all for now.

On the off chance anyone might be interested. As some may recall I made a post about considering going with something electronic to replace the latest paper notebook. I've been using hardbound blank books since the late 80s as a combination journal and notebooks. I have very nearly an entire shelf full of these that are filled with my scribblings. Unfortunately lately I've developed issues where handling paper makes me sick. It was the driving reason I started using ebooks and dedicated ebook readers about midway through the last year.

I still haven't gotten anything to use a PDA. The past month I've been considering the iPod Touch and it looks like a nice enough device. Not exactly impressed with it though. I've fiddled with one in a store recently and while it might be usable the on-screen keyboard seems rather awkward.

I'm thinking a small netbook would probably be the best thing at this point. An 8" model or something. I could even load it with a few of my favorite open source compilers and use the various utilities I've written over the years on it.

Anyone have any thoughts to add? I'm as undecided as ever.

Been awhile

It's been awhile since I've posted anything here so this is an update I guess.

I still haven't found an electronic replacement for my everywhere journal but we'll see.

My brother finally got the 1994 Sunbird squared away and it passed the emissions inspection. We only had to replace the battery and the alternator and patch the radiator to get the thing working again.

I need to get stuff together for the Holiday/Christmas/Yule/Whatever cards this year. Like as not this year I'll probably go through the cards I got last year and only send cards to those people. Seems like a plan at anyrate. I still haven't gotten the cards yet but I hope to at some point this week.

I've read over forty books on my Kindle DX so far. Not too bad for a four month period. Oddly I find that I prefer reading in the landscape rather than portrait orientation. It just seems more comfortable that way. It's so nice to be able to adjust text size while reading. When my eyes start to get tired I just bump it up a notch or two. :)

The evil trash-burning neighbors moved out the other month. Maybe my sinuses will get a little better soon. I'm still having that crackle in the skull thing, I've had since shortly after those morons moved in. It might be getting less frequent though, we'll see.

That's all for now.

As some of you know for decades I've carried a notebook for jotting ideas, logging various things and what not. I'm coming up on the last page of the hardback 256 page journal book I've been using since 2004. I've been trying to move away from paper of late and I find myself trying to decide what I'll be replacing it with. Do I want to get another blank book and keep at it with pen on paper or do I want to go higher tech with a PDA or something. Decisions, decisions. Right now it looks like my choices are pretty much iPAQ or netbook if I want something electronic.

So I pose the question, what do you guys use these days?
