I intended to be posting more this year but here is the second of March and this is my first post here since December. There really isn't that much going on of late. At least very little that'd make for interesting reading.

The biggest news of the month is probably that a section of the ceiling in my garage fell making a huge mess of broken glass from the large fluorescent bulbs, brownish dusty insulation, broken sheetrock, and sundry detritus that the previous occupants stuffed in the attic. The fluorescent light wasn't secured to a beam as it should have been, it was just attached to the sheetrock of the ceiling. It's not the first example of shoddy and ill thought work I've discovered in this house. I doubt it'll be the last, sadly.

In other news the Raspberry Pi I fiddled with off and on throughout 2015 has found a more long term use. It's now running a wiki I'm using for notes and whatnot. Would like to get add a RS-232 port to it so I can attach an X10 firecracker so I can set up cron jobs to turn lights on and off.

The headaches that plagued me throughout 2014 and 2015 are still with me and making me quite irritable from time to time. There isn't much to be done about it at this point. Curiously coffee with a teaspoon of ground cayenne pepper per cup has a really potent ameliorating effect. So far it's the most effective remedy for these headaches that I've found.

I've returned to working on a little writing project I've been dabbling with off and on for too many years now. I'm going to be in need of test readers for it before too much longer, I hope.

That's all for now.

Well, it's the end of the month and just about the end of the week. Shumate came by this afternoon to check the air conditioner. Just the routine seasonal maintenance. Nothing more to be said about it.

It looks to be a nice Saturday and here I sit waiting for a few phone calls. The oven is finally fixed so I'm thinking about celebrating by baking something. Will have to figure out what I have the ingredients to make. At any rate that's one less repair to worry about.

Ended up having to change the front locks. The door knob came mysteriously unlocked again the other evening. This has happened a couple times previously over these last few months. Always the door knob, the deadbolt thankfully stays locked every time. Someone it seems enjoys messing with locks late at night. The new locks are bump resistant so we'll see how that goes. I've heard of similar incidents from folks around the neighborhood. In particular someone opened my brother's basement door. As far as we can tell nothing was taken, the door was just unlocked and pushed open. That was back in November I think. He has since boarded the door over from the inside and stuck a table in front of it.

For those interested in a novel that takes a modern and rather off-kilter take on the Cthulhu Mythos I'll recommend giving Seamus Cooper's Mall of Cthulhu a read. It's a bit rocky at the beginning but improves as it progresses. I think the author was trying for humor but am not entirely sure. It was an amusing and quick read.

My oven is still broken. It looks like it's going to take a little longer to acquire a heating element for it. The Microwave seems to be working mostly okay. Still, I'm relying more than I like on stove top meals. One can only tolerate a diet of soups and stews so long.

In other news I broke down and ordered two pairs of jeans from the web. I was down to one pair that was quite the worse for wear. I probably shouldn't wait until I'm down to one pair but I don't get the opportunity to get to places to purchase clothing ordering online is a bit of a last resort. I'd rather prefer to see what I'm buying before money changes hands when I'm buying clothes.

Still waiting to see what sorts of 5 to 10 inch tablet devices come out this year.

Not much I can think to say just now. Had some excitement Sunday while cooking dinner, the wooden spatula I've been using for over a decade snapped while I was browning some ground turkey. The pan flipped on me scalding me a little. It's pretty much healed as of today.

In other news one of the springs on the garage door snapped yesterday. It should have been changed when we replaced the other spring a couple years ago after it snapped. My brothers couldn't get to it then. Anyrate we already had all the parts on hand so it didn't take too long.

This is my post this week. I finally found some sweatpants at one and only one Wal-Mart near me. Tried other stores but had no luck. Compared prices at the store and what I saw on the website and learned that they were cheaper if ordered from Wal-Mart online. Bought a pair at the store I found them and resolved to order the rest online.

My oven died the other day. Looks like the bottom heating element burned out. That's the same failure the oven had five years ago, the heating element was replaced then and it looks like it'll be replaced yet again.

Other than that there isn't really anything new to report. I have a headache so I'll close here. Maybe next week I'll have more to say. Be well, all.

Now that things are getting in order financially and contractually I'm looking to find a new house in a more suitable area. I'm curious about the experiences that you guys might have had in the Atlanta metro area. I'm looking for something accessible to MARTA, relatively low crime, a grocery store or two within comfortable walking distance, and the like. What areas should I be looking at first?

I'm asking because my general knowledge of this stuff is about ten years out of date.

Well, the leak has been found and fixed. I hope.

Now, I have to ask, does anyone have any suggestions for dealing with mold?

Don't you just love harddisk crashes and mystery plumbing leaks? If it's not one thing it's another.

Had an interesting time getting a lizard out of the house. Finally managed to get it to go out the sliding door. Herding lizards is hard they don't always take off in the direction you expect.

I wish I could figure out how he got in. I sealed off where I thought they were coming in last year but there must be somewhere else too.

I went to get something out of the closet in the office and found a dead anole. That's the second dead lizard I've found in the house this winter. It's more than a little disconcerting to discover dead critters when you open seldom opened doors in the house. It'll soon be spring and a little spring cleaning is definitely called for.

My eldest brother is back in California after a two week stay for Thanksgiving as of last weekend. I've got a dozen holiday cards ready to be mailed. I'll probably do that next weekend if all goes well. Failing that I'll probably put them in the mailbox with the flag up for the mail carrier to pick up. Looks like I'm sending out fourteen cards this year. Two of them landed in the mail a tad earlier than I intended. I'd left them in the letter holder by the door and my brother grabbed them one day and took them to the post office with some stuff he wanted to mail. Oh, if anyone reading this wants a card this year, I've still got cards and stamps to go around. Just drop me a line with a postal address or something. (I'll set comment screening for all comments for this post.)

I've continued to take pictures of the progress on the new storm drain The Storm Drain gallery is up to 85 images now. For those few who might be interested the gallery can be found on my web site. There's a link to it in an earlier entry,

My yuletide shopping continues. All of it being conducted online which as I recall is how it was last year as well. I guess that's the 21st century for you.

Well, work on the storm drains continue along. I took some more pictures today on the theory that all the noise they made today was reflective that some progress is being made. The gravel they keep bringing in is going somewhere even if I don't quite see where it's all going. Today they've added a pile of sand next to the pile of gravel. I'm starting to suspect I may not have grass in my yard for quite a few months. I'm uploading the new images to the same gallery I linked to Saturday. You can refer to that post if you're curious. I'm somewhat amused that the large backhoe they've got out there is a Volvo. The other earth movers they're using are Volvos too. I don't know why that amuses me, it just does.

They've been working on the storm drain in my yard these past couple weeks. I took a few pictures of the work in progress for my brother and thought I'd share them here.

Today we talk about cleanout plugs. While the guys from the county were here checking things out Monday night they told us they'd be happy to flush out the sewage line. They had the equipment but alas for some unfathomable reason this house had no external cleanout plug. The only cleanout plug was located in the crawlspace making it next to impossible to get to. Following on from that they told us if we'd put one where it was accessible they'd come back out and flush the line. With that in mind W started digging around where the sewage pipe left the house.

We were kind of thinking the cleanout might merely be buried. Such wasn't our luck. W dug into the ground while I held the flashlight. This was around 11PM or so. That flashlight must have seemed like a beacon to every flying insect for miles because they flocked to it. Ugh! At any rate, we eventually got deep enough and found where the pipe exited and no sign of a cleanout. The pipe came out of the house and took a 45 degree angle straight down. Digging a little over a foot deeper we found where it connected to the sewage pipe. Which by the way did in fact go off at an angle that looked like it indeed must run right through the middle of that patch of grass I talked about in my last post. W decided he was going to put in a cleanout first thing in the morning. Home Depot opens at 7 after all. His friend R had already agreed to come out and help him with the task.

I slept over at his house and in the morning he took off for Home Depot. He was already working on it when I walked over to the house. August is really not a good month for this kind of thing. It's just too swelteringly hot for any kind of outdoor work and I'm especially vulnerable to heat exhaustion. I hated not being able to do more to help except for running water or flushing toilets when we needed to check for leaks. They finished around 1:00 in the afternoon and headed off to the office to get to either a scanning or CD duplication job. I'm not sure which it was.

It wasn't long before the guys from the county arrived with their large blue tank truck. Long enough for the join compounds to have set I hope. (W used something with a 20-minute set time so it should be fine.) They quickly got to work flushing the line. I watched from the driveway hoping I wouldn't see what I was fully expecting to see. But alas it wasn't long before water and gray ooze came gushing out of the hole. The resulting geyser only rose to about a foot before they cut it off. (This was much to R's disappointment when I called to tell them about it later. R harbored a certain glee at the thought of having video of the sewage shooting upwards of a hundred feet and showering the neighbor's house. While it might have made a statement on Youtube I'm very glad the reality wasn't that dramatic. It's really not a mess I'd want anything to do with.)

As I write this it is day three of this little episode and there's a crew out there, as I write this, digging a huge hole on the front lawn. Judging by the man standing in it it's about 5 feet deep at the moment. Hopefully it'll all be fixed before the day is finished.

Let me say this right now. If you live in a house make sure you know where the sewage line cleanout is. If you don't have one that's accessible from the house's exterior you really want to consider having one installed. You never know when something like this might happen and it's always good to be at the very least minimally prepared. It might save you from digging holes in your yard in the middle of the night. :)

Well, now this is really shaping up to be one of those weeks. Late yesterday afternoon I kept hearing these odd coughing like sounds. I followed the sounds into the bathroom where I found dirty water rising out of the drain. This is the first time I've ever seen the plumbing back up at a place where I was living. I didn't really know what to make of it so I called my brother to see what he had to say. He drove out here from the office, where he all but lives these days, and took a look. He opened the cap under the house and drained it into a bucket. To finish off he dumped in some hair & grease clog remover. Simple, huh? I wish.

The past couple years there's been a patch of grass at the edge of the yard that stays greener and grows faster than the rest of the yard. I started wondering if maybe this drainage problem was related to that patch of grass. From past experience in other houses over the years I've found that when a particular spot of vegetation is growing exceptionally well and robustly it's always sitting on top of a compromised septic tank. I explained my concerns to my brother and that I had a suspicion that the sewage line ran at a angle from the house bisecting that particular spot somehow. The mysteriously vigorous spot of grass was not at all on a straight line with where the sewage exits the house.

While he was explaining that to me we noticed a soft spot of dirt amidst that really green grass and decided he was going to see how soft it was. We got the shovel from the garage and he proceeded to do just that. It was pretty soft and he kept digging until he got to about a foot or so down. We both watched as the filled with water. It smelled very strongly of sulfur to me. W said it smelled like sewage to him. At that point we knew it was time to figure out who to call.

Thankfully the water bill listed a 24 hour emergency number so we called and they sent someone by to look at it. They arrived about two hours later. The three guys who showed up were very friendly and took a look at it and at the plumbing under the house. They didn't think it was the sewage line, because they'd found a small blue pipe close by the hole; the water line from the county and figured it must be a water line leak on the county's side. By time they'd arrived the water coming up into the hole didn't smell bad at all. It just had a slight musty smell to it. In other words it didn't smell like sewage. They told us they'd send someone by in the morning to look at it and see what needed to be done.

Well, we'd flushed a good bit of water through the system between our discovery of the leak by the street and their arrival, in order to finish out what we'd been doing to clear the blockage. So, the water that was coming through the sewage line was more than likely mostly clean.

Right, I think that's enough for now. I need to get ready to walk over to my brother's house. I need to wash some clothes and I'll be spending the night there as I did last night. It still isn't fixed so I need to go really light on it until it is. Could someone remind me to write up the second half of this tale of woe tomorrow, please?
