It's been a couple weeks since my last entry here so I thought I'd post one this evening. Things are mostly okay. Not much new to report. The weather lately has been entirely too hot for me. That's one thing I really hate about living in Georgia, these hot humid seemingly endless summer days.

I am getting pretty tired of the door-to-door religion peddlers. Several groups seem to have decided this neighborhood is prime territory for their depredations. Of course they're all some flavor of Christianity or another. I've been able to identify three distinct strains. Jehovah's Witnesses, of course, being one. Another seem to be Mormon-like although if they're Mormons they're being pretty stealthy about not giving it direct reference. The third strain is particularly worrisome to me in that they seem to be trying to push some sort of prosperity gospel nonsense.

My KVM switch seems to have developed a new quirk this past month. The keyboard keeps dropping out when I change computers. Unplugging it from the switch for several seconds has restored it thus far. I should probably seriously start looking into getting a new one. I got this one shortly after I moved to this house and it was the cheapest one I could find. It's a four port KVM and I paid about $20 for it in '04.

The search for an electronic replacement for my paper journal/notebook has ended for now. I found a Toshiba NB305-N310 at a price that I couldn't refuse. It came with Windows XP Home and has a stated battery life of 11 hours. In my initial tests it managed to last 14 hours on a single charge. It's not a perfect solution but it's small and light and it'll do the job for a couple years. Beyond that we'll see what's on the market in 2012.

Nothing really new. I'm still researching netbooks though I am now sure that a netbook is the best solution for what I've been looking for. I've been a bit sick this week but I think it's probably just allergies.

I'm wondering if we're going to see an upsurge in demand for Senet sets after this week's episode of Lost featured that game so prominently.

A word about Phil. )

So anybody out there? I'm having a pretty lonely Saturday night.

Anyrate I've almost decided against the tablet netbook. As far as those goes it'll probably be better to wait a year or two and see what comes out. Which brings me back to eee PC 1001P that I was seriously considering before I was enticed tabletward. This netbook boasts an 11 hour battery life which is a major plus given how I plan to use it. If all goes well I'll probably purchase one in mid May.

June will be my month for traveling. Looking into bus and train travel since I don't think I have the patience these days to deal with the travesty we laughingly or not call airport security in the early 21st century. To those who might ask, a trip to Seattle is certainly a possibility, so let me know if June is good. Minnesota is next to definite, knock on wood.

In other news I'm giving thought to just deactivating my Facebook account. I've been on Facebook for 2 years now and quite frankly I've yet to see much point to it.

Not much to say this week. I'm still looking at hand held devices and am seriously considering getting an Asus eee PC T101MT. A convertible tablet has a lot of appeal. An actual keyboard would be worth the extra ounces of weight.

Haven't done much week. It's been about three weeks since I've even gotten out to a grocery store. [sigh]

Nothing really new this week. Getting a little tired of hearing about the Apple iPad but what can you do? I wouldn't mind having one but it's not a must have item. Nor does it appear to be what I've been looking for these past four months.

Speaking of which at the moment I'm leaning strongly towards just getting a netbook to serve as a take-along journal replacement. AN Asus Eee PC 1001P seems the most promising at the moment. Now that companies are starting to announce prices for the tablet devices they'll be releasing in the coming months I'm seeing a clear trend of pricing them at $500 or more and I'm not really interested in putting that kind of money down for something potentially less flexible than what I could get in a netbook for $300.

The mattress was picked up this morning. I didn't realize how smelly and dusty the thing was. Next week the box spring will follow and the week after that possibly the frame. Then maybe I can rearrange the remaining furniture to afford better access to the closets. There'll still be a great deal of furniture in there but without the huge bed there'll be room to move at the least. This probably should have been done about 2 years ago.

Behind this cut there's a long rambling rumination on various smallish or handheld devices I've looked at or considered as a paper notebook/journal replacement. Don't expect it to be all that organized. It could probably use a pass or two by a copy editor but if I were going to worry about that today I'd probably never bother to post any of this stuff. )

In other news I need to lose about 5 lbs which means I need to get more exercise. That should be easy enough as far as it goes.

I guess that's all for now.

I've decided for the nonce that I'm going to try to post every week. There isn't much to say this week. I'll just address a couple things and we'll see what else comes to mind if anything.

I think this is the year I need to finally empty my mother's old room and get things squared away for whatever repairs need to be done to that room. I've been putting it off for four years now. Just need to get the bed out of there so I can have enough room to move around in there. My mother liked to keep rooms tightly packed wall to wall with furniture and stuff. The bed will probably go to the side of the road a component at a time since I now know the trash collector will pick up one and only large item a week. Maybe getting it out of the house will help my sinuses a little. Who knows?

Apple announced the iPad today which is certainly going on my list of candidates for journal book replacement. It would seem more viable for the role than the iPod Touch. However, a cheaper netbook is still looking like what I'll end up getting.

I'm currently reading Fragile Things by Neil Gaiman and Pirate Latitudes by Michael Crichton. Also reading a collection of essays about Firefly/Serenity which so far has been a little annoying in that the first few essays seem more about tearing down every other bit of television science fiction in attempt to show how wonderful Firefly is in comparison. I'm hoping that the essays get better further in. I also loaded the Kindle with a few collections of H.P. Lovecraft's fiction the other night. I've been meaning to catch up on my reading of his work and now seems like as good a time as any.

On the off chance anyone might be interested. As some may recall I made a post about considering going with something electronic to replace the latest paper notebook. I've been using hardbound blank books since the late 80s as a combination journal and notebooks. I have very nearly an entire shelf full of these that are filled with my scribblings. Unfortunately lately I've developed issues where handling paper makes me sick. It was the driving reason I started using ebooks and dedicated ebook readers about midway through the last year.

I still haven't gotten anything to use a PDA. The past month I've been considering the iPod Touch and it looks like a nice enough device. Not exactly impressed with it though. I've fiddled with one in a store recently and while it might be usable the on-screen keyboard seems rather awkward.

I'm thinking a small netbook would probably be the best thing at this point. An 8" model or something. I could even load it with a few of my favorite open source compilers and use the various utilities I've written over the years on it.

Anyone have any thoughts to add? I'm as undecided as ever.
