See, now doesn't that make ever so much more sense? Isn't it nice to see an expression properly stated rather than garbled into ill-thought nonsense?

Actually the other version may be older. Yeast was often tested by making a kind of steamed dumpling that could be boiled and tested for taste quickly. Some yeasts can still make bread rise but have a bad taste that is really only obvious after cooking.
