Can someone please explain to me the point behind Twitter? What's it good for?

From my very vague knowledge, it is effectively like sending SMS messages to the internet so everyone can see them instead of just a person or two that you specifically send it to in your cell phone's address book.

That sounds potentially expensive considering what most of the cell phone plans. I've looked at lately. charge for texting.
