See sdaemon's answer, add a healthy dollop of education, a glug (yes, that's a unit of measure in my kitchen) of outspokenness, a pinch of asperity and a dash of cynicism; stir well and you have a recipe for an individual who can be intimidating to one who has been indoctrinated by today's society.
You aren't in the least intimidating. People who think you are so simply feel lacking in comparison and thus, create the sense of intimidation in themselves.
